Learn more about field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).
Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are integrated circuits that can be reprogrammed to perform a wide range of digital logic functions. They are called “field-programmable” because they can be programmed and reprogrammed after they have been made, unlike application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), which are always set up for a certain function.
FPGAs consist of an array of configurable logic blocks (CLBs) that can be connected together through programmable interconnects. Each CLB contains a small number of programmable logic gates and flip-flops, and can be programmed to perform a specific logic function. The interconnects allow the CLBs to be connected in various configurations to implement complex digital logic circuits.
FPGAs offer several advantages over other types of digital logic circuits:
Flexibility: FPGAs can be reprogrammed to do a wide range of digital logic functions, which makes them useful in many different situations.
Speed: FPGAs can work at very high speeds, which makes them good for high-speed tasks like networking and video processing.
Low power use: FPGAs can be made to use less power than other digital logic circuits, which makes them good for portable or low-power devices.
Short development time: FPGAs are easy to program and test, so it takes less time and money to get a new product on the market.
FPGAs are programmed using a hardware description language (HDL) such as VHDL or Verilog. The HDL code is used to specify the digital logic functions that the FPGA should perform. The code is then synthesized and mapped to the specific FPGA device using specialized software tools. The resulting configuration file is then loaded onto the FPGA to configure it for operation.
FPGAs are used in a wide range of applications, including:
- High-speed networking
- Video processing
- Image processing
- Digital signal processing
- Industrial control
- Aerospace and defense
- Medical devices
- Automotive applications
- Consumer electronics
